I teach courses that bridge psychology and biology and serve as advisor to students pursuing careers in medicine Many premed students are science majors who do not always recognize the benefit of courses in the humanities, and I have been trying to design courses that bridge this gap, including a ceramics course in art and medicine designed to encourage exploration of human form and function while engaging students in exercises that compare potter and physician with the notion of the patient as an art form. The course was designed to help students hone their skills for visualizing and communicating morphology while recognizing the importance of using one’s hands and other senses to treat patients. The course also provided students with the opportunity to personally experience the therapeutic value of the arts and recognize their role in medicine.
